We started off our third & final day in Florence at the Mercato Centrale, wandered through Medici’s Palace & spent the remainder of the day viewing the surroundings by Vespa.

Palazzo Medici Riccardi.  I stumbled upon the Medici Palace while researching top places to go in Florence.  I fell in love with the palace from afar & jotted down the location on the itinerary.  Once we were finally there, it was fascinating getting a mere glimpse into what the lives of Italian royals must have been like in the 1400s.

The best part about Medici Palace in my opinion though was when my family & I were looking up at the ceiling murals & I spotted a naked angel boy that looked exactly like Tyler as a kid.  We are still laughing to this day about it!

Mercato Centrale.  This place was busy & so full of life.  Think of your local farmer’s market but like…on steroids.

Tyler ordered his daily espresso at a cafe inside the massive building designated for the market while we were welcomed by smells of fresh Italian food & the sight of beautiful bundles of flowers & produce.

I think Tyler thought it was a bit too amusing when I turned a corner & was met with an entire cow head at one of the deli booths which caused me to start tearing up, haha (but still not funny at the same time)!

We had lunch at the popular Da Nerbone inside the market & sat next to a sweet girl traveling solo from Asia.  Tyler still doesn’t know what he ordered or ate there. LOL.  …Some kind of scary meat possibly.

Walkabout Florence. Whenever I pictured my Italy dream trip, I pictured myself riding around on a Vespa like Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday (although, Tyler would say he was definitely more of a Jason Bourne type character on that scooter). 😛 So again after researching various options, I decided on booking a Vespa experience with Walkabout Florence.  This was definitely one of the highlights of the trip for us & it was completely worth every penny!!

We rode up to the Piazzale Michelangelo, through vineyards, & atop Pian dei Giullari where Galileo use to sit & study the night sky.  We went with a group of other couples & a guide led us throughout the 4 hours of the ride & I wish I remembered his name because he really made the experience that much more fun!  Although, there were definitely some nerve-racking moments on the back of the Vespa in the hands of Tyler’s daring self but we obviously made it through ok. 😉

At the end of the ride, we were taken to a private vineyard & served a delicious handmade meal with bottles of wine & breathtaking views.  After relaxing on the lawn for a bit, we hopped back on our scooters & returned to the inner city… when it started to rain. Tyler & I ran all the way back to our B&B laughing as we were wearing light linen clothes that became completely see-through as we got pelted with raindrops.

Gusta Pizza.  A friend of ours who studied abroad in Florence suggested that we try out this pizzeria & we are so glad we did for dinner! Heart-shaped pizzas & cheap delicious beer made for one happy girl.  The restaurant was filled with notes left from other visitors around the world which were fun to look at & we were sure to slip one underneath our own glass tabletop.  I think Tyler attempted to draw a cow for Illinois next to our names. 😂

We walked home with the most beautiful big blue moon above us & obviously sad that it was our last night in Florence but excited for the next stop, Cinque Terre.

So much to say about this, haha! First of all the part about the angel boy and the cow head made me laugh really hard. Also, this outfit is perfection on you one of my favorites from the trip! Of course I also have to mention how delicious that pizza looks 🙂 Beautiful snaps!

Thank you, Uzo! It was a complete blast. The pizza stains on my all white ensemble were definitely worth it, that’s for sure. 😉

  • Colleen Welsch

I would be TERRIFIED if I saw a big cow’s head in a deli! Riding around in a vespa through those crowded streets also sounds scary, but when in Florence, right? That pizza looks great! Can’t wait to see you post on Cinque Terre!

    • Mel Carr

Haha it was definitely NOT OK with me!

We luckily did most of our riding in the outskirts of Florence so it was much less stressful out by the countryside but, yes, in the city I definitely held on tighter! Yikes!

And the pizza, I could eat every single day for the rest of my life & be happy. 🙂

Thanks so much for stopping by the blog!

If it makes you feel any better, it was nearly 100 degree weather every day we were there since Europe was having an unusual heat wave, lol! But such a beautiful city rain or (too much) shine. Looks we both have an excuse to make a trip back — to experience Italy in a different season.

  • Richel V.

Florence looks too beautiful. I can’t wait to see it with my own eyes.

It’s impossible to read it, because every line makes me hungry for architecture, views or food. Amazing.
