FLORENCE | PART I

As I sit on the ‘L’, prepping my write up on my Europe series, I’m trying to think of how I’m going to do this. Re-creating the actual emotions of a pivotal experience within writing is so important to me but never as easy said than done.  I want to capture the memories in as many ways possible, whether that’s through video, photography, blogging.  Let’s be honest…my brain isn’t as reliable & of course, these moments are meant to be cherished for a lifetime!  This trip was especially dear to my heart because it had been a lifelong dream of mine.  Growing up, I was always fascinated with Italy yet I’m not quite sure what sparked the love affair.  What’s not to love though?  I always had photographs of Italian landscapes up in the house, spent time watching Sophia Loren movies, & went on to study Italian in college.

So here it goes you guys!  I’ll be posting this series in a day-by-day fashion as we packed so much into each one during our travels.  🙂  Hopefully some of these tips will help you prep for your own dream trip!

ACCOMODATIONS:

Air BnB.  Florence has an endless amount of cute Air BnBs.  There are also a good amount that include air conditioning (a rarity in Europe, even in this day)!  If you are going in a group or with family you will be hard pressed to find a more cost effective route.  Also, be sure to note that a lot of places in Europe do not have elevators as the buildings are so old.  We definitely worked off all that pasta carrying up our luggage & climbing the stairs in the heat!  Our cute place was right in the heart of florence near the train station & within walking distance to all the main attractions.

TRANSPORTATION:

The flight all the way to Europe from Chicago certainly exceeded my expectations.  Well, aside from the screaming children the entire way but who can help that?  You can be sure that noise-canceling headphones will be on my next travel check-list though. 😉  On the flight, there are endless amounts of quality films & shows to keep you busy & the attendants come by with food & drink at what seems like every hour.  Thank’s United!  I wore a cotton dress on board as I knew it was going to be comfortable & breathable for if/when it got stuffy (which is got quite toasty).  There are of course blankets on board so that will have you covered if things get chilly.

We transferred at Frankfurt Airport which I had heard some negative feedback about but everything went so smoothly!  The only weird thing was that there was no announcement for boarding at the gate & from there they shuttle you to your plane.  So if you don’t pay attention to your boarding time…you’re essentially doomed…yikes!  Also, be sure to try some German beer & pretzels if you have time!

When we landed it was not hard to find a taxi to take us to our B&B.  Just be sure to take a taxi at the actual taxi rank & do not agree to a ride offered to you from someone that approaches you.  Florence Airport has fixed rates for rides into the city so be sure to confirm this rate with your driver before getting in.

FOOD:

Lunch. Our first meal we had in Florence ended up being our best one there.  I’m not sure if it was the spontaneity of it all (was the only restaurant we hadn’t planned to eat at) or just because it was our first taste of authentic local Italian food but OMG, you guys.  We found the little hole in the wall, Panini Toscani, when checking out The Duomo.  Their approach is to tailor a sandwich to your individual tastes.  We got to try cheeses, breads, & meats from all over the region, picking our favorites along the way before our masterpiece was crafted.  Afterwards, we looked up this gem online & noticed it had 5 stars from over 500 people (which I had never come across before) & rated the #2 restaurant in Florence by Trip Advisor but it’s no secret as to why!

Dinner. Our next meal was spent at Giannino in San Lorenzo.  Everything was deliciouso but I highly recommend the ravioli with truffle sauce.  This was also right near The Duomo which is so beautiful to walk by at night as well.  My rule of thumb for choosing a place to eat (if you’re not doing so ahead of time) is to stay away from restaurants with obnoxious pictures of menu items outside the establishment & search for where all the locals are eating at around 8pm, which is their standard dining time.  Italians are the most serious foodies that I know of & this comes with a serious list of rules for eating but no one seemed offended by our American ways. 😛  It is interesting to look these up though & you can find other blog posts on this.

florence^^CHANGING FOR DINNER WAS A MUST! 70s FOR A FLORENCE SUMMER IS COMMON BUT THIS YEAR THEY HAD AN UNSUAL HEAT WAVE WHICH HAD US DEALING WITH THE 90s. ^^

SITES:

The Duomo.  You obviously can’t miss this, even if you tried.  Florence is centered around this UNESCO World Heritage Site.  I loved the pink & greens on the outside interior just like the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella.  We did not venture inside due to long lines but there are churches on nearly every block of Florence & many that you can walk into immediately & experience the beautiful architecture.

Basilica of Santa Maria Novella.  This plaza was much more peaceful than the other sites we visited this day.  The church is so charming & we enjoyed the opportunity for pictures without the crowds.

Ponte Vecchio.  I can’t decide whether Ponte Vecchio is more enjoyable by day or by night.  Equally beautiful.  I can’t speak for the shops since my budget did not account for fine jewelry, ha, but it’s certainly a must see.  Window shopping was entertaining in itself.  What I found most fascinating was how the shops hang off the sides of the bridge & only appear to be supported by wooden spikes!  Like how does that work!?
